Credit dispute letter

A bureau dispute works when it names one account and one error. Fill this in, copy it, and mail it certified. The letter stays in your browser. An accurate negative item can still remain, and this is not legal advice.

Re: Dispute of inaccurate information on my credit file

To whom it may concern:

I am writing under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, 15 U.S.C. § 1681i, to dispute information on my credit file. Please investigate the item below and correct or delete anything you cannot verify.

What is wrong: This account is not mine

Please delete this account. It is not mine, and I did not authorize it.

Please send me the results of the investigation and an updated copy of my credit file. Do not send this letter, or my full Social Security number, back in the mail.

Sincerely,
[Your full name]

Mail it certified to Equifax Information Services LLC, P.O. Box 740256, Atlanta, GA 30374. Attach a copy of your ID and a proof of address. Leave your full Social Security number off the letter.

After you mail it, estimate the investigation window with the dispute deadline calculator. The full process, including what to do if the bureau says “verified,” is in how to dispute credit report errors. A collector who cannot prove the debt is a different letter: debt validation.

This writes one letter for one account. 850ai reads all three bureaus, drafts a letter per account, and on the Send plan ($59.99/mo) mails the bureau letters when you click Send. Connect a report or upload a PDF to see what it flags before you pick a plan. You can always dispute with the bureaus directly at no cost.

Questions

Will this letter remove a negative item?

No letter can promise that. A bureau must investigate a specific inaccuracy and delete or correct what it cannot verify. An accurate negative item can stay for the reporting period.

Should I send one letter for every account?

Yes. One account, one bureau, one error. A letter that lists everything on the report is harder to investigate.

Do I mail Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion the same letter?

Only if that same error is on each file. The three bureaus keep separate files, so check each report and address each letter to the bureau that shows the item.

Is this the same as a 609 letter?

No. This is a standard FCRA accuracy dispute. A so-called 609 letter asks for the documents behind the file. That is a different request, and it is not a shortcut to deletion.
